At just 17 years old, Jessica is working tirelessly to achieve her dream of finishing high school. Despite the challenges she faces, she is on track to graduate this December—a milestone that will open doors to a brighter future. Every Saturday, she embarks on a long journey, taking a bus for an hour each way to attend classes in the city. It is on these Saturdays that she receives all her assignments for the week, which she diligently completes from home.
Continuing her education has not been easy, but thanks to the generosity of donors to One Common Thread, Jessica was gifted a small refurbished laptop—an invaluable tool that has made all the difference. With this laptop, she can complete her schoolwork efficiently, ensuring she stays on top of her studies while balancing her responsibilities at home.
Jessica’s dedication extends beyond her education. She pours herself into her sewing, a craft she has honed over the last five years while assisting her mother, Ruth—one of our original Makers. Jessica’s skill and diligence shine through in every stitch, as she helps provide for her family. Her earnings contribute to the well-being of her little brother, Osvil, and their five-year-old cousin, who lives with them on and off.
Through perseverance and hard work, Jessica is shaping a future filled with possibilities. She is not only determined to graduate but also to support her family with her craftsmanship. Her story is a testament to resilience, love, and the power of opportunity.
