Handmade quilt by women in San Pedro Sula, Honduras

Description

Damaris, Jessica and Ruth’s collaboration on this scrappy honeycomb-designed quilt is a beautiful testament to their dedication and resilience. As a mother-daughter team, they’ve found a way to support themselves through sewing while also pursuing personal growth and new opportunities.

Damaris sews from home while also taking continuing education classes to learn English. Her goal is to work in a call center, reflecting her determination to create a better future for herself and her daughter, Aldonce. Saving money to send Aldonce to a special English immersion school further demonstrates Damaris’s commitment to providing her child with the best possible education. Damaris has also recently developed a new passion for baking, which has become her hobby and a way for her to express her creativity outside of sewing.

Ruth, who recently got married, continues to face challenges with her eyesight, but she understands the importance of sewing as a crucial source of income. Her determination to keep sewing despite the difficulties speaks to her strength and resilience. Ruth’s unwavering support for her daughters is evident in everything she does, including cheering on her youngest daughter, Jessica.

Jessica, 17, is working hard to finish her high school diploma by attending classes on weekends at a school two hours away. She is on track to graduate in December 2025, and her dedication to balancing her education with family responsibilities is truly inspiring.

Together, Damaris, Ruth, and Jessica form a powerful team, each driven by their own dreams and ambitions. With the support of One Common Thread, they have the opportunity to pursue their goals and work toward improving their circumstances, achieving both personal and financial stability. Their story is a beautiful example of how, even in the face of adversity, determination and family support can create a path to a brighter future.
