Genesis and Flor are two remarkable sisters whose strength and determination shine through everything they do. When they were just 4 and 5 years old, they lost their mother to cancer—a heartbreaking event that changed the course of their young lives. From that moment on, the sisters, along with their brother, were taken in and lovingly raised by their oldest sister, who has been their guardian and role model for the past ten years. Despite the loss and hardships they have faced, Genesis and Flor have grown into bright, compassionate, and motivated young women.
Both girls attend school full-time and dedicate their afternoons and weekends to sewing with One Common Thread to help support their family. Their ability to balance their studies with their work is a testament to their incredible work ethic and love for their family. They find joy and purpose in sewing, not only as a way to contribute financially but also as a way to honor their mother’s memory by working hard to build a better future.
Genesis, now in 8th grade, is preparing to begin the challenges of high school when the school year ends in November 2025. She approaches her education with focus and maturity beyond her years. Flor, one year younger, is thriving in 7th grade and was recently elected class president, a recognition of her leadership, kindness, and academic excellence. Together, these sisters are proof that even in the face of loss, love and perseverance can create something beautiful. Their story continues to inspire all of us at One Common Thread.
*Each hexagon is made from scrap material, but contains certain predominant colors. Majority of fabric is 100% cotton.
