What Is a Hexagon Quilt?

A hexagon quilt is a style of quilt made by sewing together small hexagon-shaped pieces of fabric. The result is a beautiful design that shows the immense detail that go into each piece. At One Common Thread, our women do this all by hand. This is the foundation of something much bigger.

How One Common Thread Started with Handmade Hexagon Quilts

In 2017, Courtney moved with her family to San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Just outside her apartment was a community where many families were living in extreme poverty. At the time, around 65% of people in the area were living without stable income.

One day after church, a young woman approached her and asked for help. She needed just a small amount of money to participate in a church activity and was looking for a way to earn it. Courtney offered her an opportunity to help.

With fabric, thread, and needles in the back of her van, Courtney taught her how to make hexagon quilts by hand using English paper piecing. That one opportunity changed everything for this young woman.

After that she quickly made 500 hexagons, and Courtney paid her for her hard work. Soon, her family members, including her mother, aunts, and cousins, began reaching out, asking for the same opportunity to work. What started as one small interaction turned into something much bigger.

That is how One Common Thread began.

More Than Just Hexagon Quilts

Today, women in Honduras are creating hexagon quilts, jackets, aprons, table runners, and more, all by hand from their homes. This work has made a real difference. Women have been able to build their own homes, purchase necessary household items, support their families, and gain confidence and independence.

The ability to provide for themselves has transformed how these women see themselves and their future.

Why Our Hexagon Quilts Matter

The hexagon quilts at One Common Thread are handmade. Each piece is cut, folded, and stitched by hand. It is detailed, patient work.

That is exactly what makes them meaningful!

Each stitch represents time, skill, and dedication. More importantly, it represents opportunity. What began with one woman asking for a way to make some money has grown into something that continues to impact families every day.

Every hexagon quilt tells a story of resilience and the ability to provide in ways they did not have access to before.

When you support One Common Thread, you are not just supporting handmade goods. You are supporting women who are building better lives for themselves and their families.

That is what makes every piece more than just a quilt.
