💛 Help Us Create a Medical Emergency Fund for Our Makers 💛
One of the greatest worries for our Makers is the burden of unexpected medical costs or prescriptions. Until now, we’ve always collected donations on a need-by-need basis — but we want to change that. We’re building a Medical Emergency Fund so that when a Maker faces a crisis, the decision to seek care isn’t delayed by fear of the cost.
We’ve seen firsthand how heartbreaking these situations can be. One of our Makers was left a widow and the sole provider for her nine children after her husband died from an infection caused by a gunshot wound to the cheek — a wound that could have been treated if they’d had the funds to visit a doctor. That tragedy occurred before she joined One Common Thread, and it’s a painful reminder of why this fund is so important.
Over the years, other Makers have faced medical emergencies such as motorcycle accidents, burns from open fires, fevers in children, and premature labor. Recently, a generous donor here in the U.S. helped save the life of Maria Isabel’s baby, who was born prematurely after Maria contracted dengue. Because of that support, her baby was able to stay in the hospital long enough to receive the care he needed — and today, he’s thriving. 🩵
Our goal is to be ready for moments like these — to act quickly and give our Makers peace of mind knowing that help is available when illness or injury strikes.
